Mentorship: Why do you need a mentor? | Canada Talents - Blog

We could all use a mentor. As simple as it sounds, most of us won’t think about it. We tend to think we can do it on our own. It is true to some extends. But having a mentor means you gain someone to support you, to guide and advise you; and the most important, you gain someone that you are accountable to. It’s become a life changer, and fast tracks your growth.

This is the main reason why you need a mentor: because a fresh set of experienced and wise eyes can only help you achieve your goals. But a mentor isn’t here to tell you exactly what to do, and this is actually why committing to a mentoring relationship is so interesting.

1. You are in control!

First of all, you are in the driver’s seat: you choose the roads you want to take. You’re the one determining your objectives, your goals and where you want to be at the end of the journey.

The mentor’s mission is to provide you with some feedback. They’ve experienced what you are going through before, which make their input essential. But once again, you’re the one in control: what you make out of their advice is up to you.

2. Open your perspectives

Moreover, the mentor isn’t the annoying passenger who tells you to hit the brakes or watch out for the speed limit and the red lights. They’re more like a human GPS, showing you itineraries.

From their neutral point of view, a mentor brings new perspectives to the struggles and challenges you face. They widen your vision, make new roads appear.

3. Win-win partnership

It’s also important to understand that you’re not the only one gaining something from a mentoring relationship. It is a two-way street and since the mentor is riding along with you, it’s only logical that he or she learns something along the way.

They get to be the person who helped you grow and to pass on their knowledge, share their experience. Giving advice and support strengthens the lessons they already learned. Committing to a mentoring relationship is an uplifting experience for both parts.

To sum it up, a mentor is here to help you, by guiding you. Showing you what is possible and giving you ideas or concrete tips on how you can make it. But they will never put their hands on the steering wheel and drive for you. At the end of the day, you still have to do things yourself - you’re just not on your own. You make your decisions, knowing someone is supporting you and will provide some insight and feedback if you ask for it.

This is why you need a mentor: because it will take you further and widen your horizons. It will enable you to reach places you were only dreaming of, and then dream bigger. And you can find a mentor at any moment: it’s not a matter of your age, but of where you’re at in your life and what the next step is for you. Whatever the answer is, you might need someone to help you find the way. If you are trouble coming up with a strategy, schedule a call with our team.
